2021-07-23userfaultfd: do not untag user pointersPeter Collingbourne
Patch series "userfaultfd: do not untag user pointers", v5. If a user program uses userfaultfd on ranges of heap memory, it may end up passing a tagged pointer to the kernel in the range.start field of the UFFDIO_REGISTER ioctl. This can happen when using an MTE-capable allocator, or on Android if using the Tagged Pointers feature for MTE readiness [1]. When a fault subsequently occurs, the tag is stripped from the fault address returned to the application in the fault.address field of struct uffd_msg. However, from the application's perspective, the tagged address *is* the memory address, so if the application is unaware of memory tags, it may get confused by receiving an address that is, from its point of view, outside of the bounds of the allocation. We observed this behavior in the kselftest for userfaultfd [2] but other applications could have the same problem. Address this by not untagging pointers passed to the userfaultfd ioctls. Instead, let the system call fail. Also change the kselftest to use mmap so that it doesn't encounter this problem. The code change is a revert of commit 7d0325749a6c ("userfaultfd: untag user pointers") plus some fixups to some additional calls to validate_range that have appeared since then. 2021-07-23tracing/histogram: Rename "cpu" to "common_cpu"Steven Rostedt (VMware)
Currently the histogram logic allows the user to write "cpu" in as an event field, and it will record the CPU that the event happened on. The problem with this is that there's a lot of events that have "cpu" as a real field, and using "cpu" as the CPU it ran on, makes it impossible to run histograms on the "cpu" field of events. For example, if I want to have a histogram on the count of the workqueue_queue_work event on its cpu field, running: ># echo 'hist:keys=cpu' > events/workqueue/workqueue_queue_work/trigger Gives a misleading and wrong result. Change the command to "common_cpu" as no event should have "common_*" fields as that's a reserved name for fields used by all events. And this makes sense here as common_cpu would be a field used by all events. If "cpu" is used, and the field is not found, it will fall back to "common_cpu" and work as it did before. This way, it will still work for old programs that use "cpu" to get the actual CPU, but if the event has a "cpu" as a field, it will get that event's "cpu" field, which is probably what it wants anyway. I updated the tracefs/README to include documentation about both the common_timestamp and the common_cpu. This way, if that text is present in the README, then an application can know that common_cpu is supported over just plain "cpu". 2021-07-21tcp: disable TFO blackhole logic by defaultWei Wang
Multiple complaints have been raised from the TFO users on the internet stating that the TFO blackhole logic is too aggressive and gets falsely triggered too often. (e.g. https://blog.apnic.net/2021/07/05/tcp-fast-open-not-so-fast/) Considering that most middleboxes no longer drop TFO packets, we decide to disable the blackhole logic by setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fastopen_blackhole_timeout_set to 0 by default. Another round of removing redundant minItems/maxItems from new schema in the recent merge window. If a property has an 'items' list, then a 'minItems' or 'maxItems' with the same size as the list is redundant and can be dropped. Note that is DT schema specific behavior and not standard json-schema behavior. The tooling will fixup the final schema adding any unspecified minItems/maxItems. This condition is partially checked with the meta-schema already, but only if both 'minItems' and 'maxItems' are equal to the 'items' length. An improved meta-schema is pending. Commit b6d5799b0b58 ("kunit: Add 'kunit_shutdown' option") changes KUnit to call kernel_halt() by default when done testing. This fixes the issue with not having .gcda files due to not calling atexit() handlers, and therefore we can stop recommending people manually tweak UML code. The need to use older versions of GCC (<=6) remains however, due to linktime issues, same as before. Note: There also might still be issues with .gcda files as well in newer versions. 2021-07-08module: add printk formats to add module build ID to stacktracesStephen Boyd
Let's make kernel stacktraces easier to identify by including the build ID[1] of a module if the stacktrace is printing a symbol from a module. This makes it simpler for developers to locate a kernel module's full debuginfo for a particular stacktrace. Combined with scripts/decode_stracktrace.sh, a developer can download the matching debuginfo from a debuginfod[2] server and find the exact file and line number for the functions plus offsets in a stacktrace that match the module. This is especially useful for pstore crash debugging where the kernel crashes are recorded in something like console-ramoops and the recovery kernel/modules are different or the debuginfo doesn't exist on the device due to space concerns (the debuginfo can be too large for space limited devices). Originally, I put this on the %pS format, but that was quickly rejected given that %pS is used in other places such as ftrace where build IDs aren't meaningful. There was some discussions on the list to put every module build ID into the "Modules linked in:" section of the stacktrace message but that quickly becomes very hard to read once you have more than three or four modules linked in. It also provides too much information when we don't expect each module to be traversed in a stacktrace. Having the build ID for modules that aren't important just makes things messy. Splitting it to multiple lines for each module quickly explodes the number of lines printed in an oops too, possibly wrapping the warning off the console. And finally, trying to stash away each module used in a callstack to provide the ID of each symbol printed is cumbersome and would require changes to each architecture to stash away modules and return their build IDs once unwinding has completed. Instead, we opt for the simpler approach of introducing new printk formats '%pS[R]b' for "pointer symbolic backtrace with module build ID" and '%pBb' for "pointer backtrace with module build ID" and then updating the few places in the architecture layer where the stacktrace is printed to use this new format. The kernel unconditionally writes the FPU state to the alternate stack without checking whether the stack is large enough to accomodate it. Check the alternate stack size before doing so and in case it's too small force a SIGSEGV instead of silently corrupting user space data. - MINSIGSTKZ and SIGSTKSZ are constants in signal.h and have never been updated despite the fact that the FPU state which is stored on the signal stack has grown over time which causes trouble in the field when AVX512 is available on a CPU. The kernel does not expose the minimum requirements for the alternate stack size depending on the available and enabled CPU features. ARM already added an aux vector AT_MINSIGSTKSZ for the same reason. Add it to x86 as well. - A major cleanup of the x86 FPU code. The recent discoveries of XSTATE related issues unearthed quite some inconsistencies, duplicated code and other issues.
