2016-05-23m32r: fix build failureSudip Mukherjee
m32r allmodconfig build was failing with the error: ERROR: "smp_flush_cache_all" [drivers/misc/lkdtm.ko] undefined! lkdtm driver at drivers/misc is using flush_icache_range() which for m32r is defined as smp_flush_cache_all() if CONFIG_SMP is defined. But as smp_flush_cache_all() was not exported so the build was failing with the error of undefined symbol. Define HAVE_EXIT_THREAD for archs which want to do something in exit_thread. For others, let's define exit_thread as an empty inline. 2016-03-15Merge branch 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull cpu hotplug updates from Thomas Gleixner: "This is the first part of the ongoing cpu hotplug rework: - Initial implementation of the state machine - Runs all online and prepare down callbacks on the plugged cpu and not on some random processor - Replaces busy loop waiting with completions - Adds tracepoints so the states can be followed" More detailed commentary on this work from an earlier email: "What's wrong with the current cpu hotplug infrastructure? - Asymmetry The hotplug notifier mechanism is asymmetric versus the bringup and teardown. This is mostly caused by the notifier mechanism. - Largely undocumented dependencies While some notifiers use explicitely defined notifier priorities, we have quite some notifiers which use numerical priorities to express dependencies without any documentation why. - Control processor driven Most of the bringup/teardown of a cpu is driven by a control processor. While it is understandable, that preperatory steps, like idle thread creation, memory allocation for and initialization of essential facilities needs to be done before a cpu can boot, there is no reason why everything else must run on a control processor. Before this patch series, bringup looks like this: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu bring the rest up - All or nothing approach There is no way to do partial bringups. That's something which is really desired because we waste e.g. at boot substantial amount of time just busy waiting that the cpu comes to life. That's stupid as we could very well do preparatory steps and the initial IPI for other cpus and then go back and do the necessary low level synchronization with the freshly booted cpu. - Minimal debuggability Due to the notifier based design, it's impossible to switch between two stages of the bringup/teardown back and forth in order to test the correctness. So in many hotplug notifiers the cancel mechanisms are either not existant or completely untested. - Notifier [un]registering is tedious To [un]register notifiers we need to protect against hotplug at every callsite. There is no mechanism that bringup/teardown callbacks are issued on the online cpus, so every caller needs to do it itself. That also includes error rollback. What's the new design? The base of the new design is a symmetric state machine, where both the control processor and the booting/dying cpu execute a well defined set of states. Each state is symmetric in the end, except for some well defined exceptions, and the bringup/teardown can be stopped and reversed at almost all states. So the bringup of a cpu will look like this in the future: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu bring itself up The synchronization step does not require the control cpu to wait. That mechanism can be done asynchronously via a worker or some other mechanism. The teardown can be made very similar, so that the dying cpu cleans up and brings itself down. Cleanups which need to be done after the cpu is gone, can be scheduled asynchronously as well. There is a long way to this, as we need to refactor the notion when a cpu is available. Today we set the cpu online right after it comes out of the low level bringup, which is not really correct. The proper mechanism is to set it to available, i.e. cpu local threads, like softirqd, hotplug thread etc. can be scheduled on that cpu, and once it finished all booting steps, it's set to online, so general workloads can be scheduled on it. The reverse happens on teardown. First thing to do is to forbid scheduling of general workloads, then teardown all the per cpu resources and finally shut it off completely. This patch series implements the basic infrastructure for this at the core level. This includes the following: - Basic state machine implementation with well defined states, so ordering and prioritization can be expressed. - Interfaces to [un]register state callbacks This invokes the bringup/teardown callback on all online cpus with the proper protection in place and [un]installs the callbacks in the state machine array. For callbacks which have no particular ordering requirement we have a dynamic state space, so that drivers don't have to register an explicit hotplug state. If a callback fails, the code automatically does a rollback to the previous state. - Sysfs interface to drive the state machine to a particular step. This is only partially functional today. Full functionality and therefor testability will be achieved once we converted all existing hotplug notifiers over to the new scheme. - Run all CPU_ONLINE/DOWN_PREPARE notifiers on the booting/dying processor: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu wait for boot bring itself up Signal completion to control cpu In a previous step of this work we've done a full tree mechanical conversion of all hotplug notifiers to the new scheme. The balance is a net removal of about 4000 lines of code. This is not included in this series, as we decided to take a different approach. Instead of mechanically converting everything over, we will do a proper overhaul of the usage sites one by one so they nicely fit into the symmetric callback scheme. I decided to do that after I looked at the ugliness of some of the converted sites and figured out that their hotplug mechanism is completely buggered anyway. So there is no point to do a mechanical conversion first as we need to go through the usage sites one by one again in order to achieve a full symmetric and testable behaviour" * 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) cpu/hotplug: Document states better cpu/hotplug: Fix smpboot thread ordering cpu/hotplug: Remove redundant state check cpu/hotplug: Plug death reporting race rcu: Make CPU_DYING_IDLE an explicit call cpu/hotplug: Make wait for dead cpu completion based cpu/hotplug: Let upcoming cpu bring itself fully up arch/hotplug: Call into idle with a proper state cpu/hotplug: Move online calls to hotplugged cpu cpu/hotplug: Create hotplug threads cpu/hotplug: Split out the state walk into functions cpu/hotplug: Unpark smpboot threads from the state machine cpu/hotplug: Move scheduler cpu_online notifier to hotplug core cpu/hotplug: Implement setup/removal interface cpu/hotplug: Make target state writeable cpu/hotplug: Add sysfs state interface cpu/hotplug: Hand in target state to _cpu_up/down cpu/hotplug: Convert the hotplugged cpu work to a state machine cpu/hotplug: Convert to a state machine for the control processor cpu/hotplug: Add tracepoints ...
2016-03-01arch/hotplug: Call into idle with a proper stateThomas Gleixner
Let the non boot cpus call into idle with the corresponding hotplug state, so the hotplug core can handle the further bringup. That's a first step to convert the boot side of the hotplugged cpus to do all the synchronization with the other side through the state machine. For now it'll only start the hotplug thread and kick the full bringup of the cpu. Set IORESOURCE_SYSTEM_RAM in flags of resource ranges with "System RAM", "Kernel code", "Kernel data", and "Kernel bss". Note that: - IORESOURCE_SYSRAM (i.e. modifier bit) is set in flags when IORESOURCE_MEM is already set. IORESOURCE_SYSTEM_RAM is defined as (IORESOURCE_MEM|IORESOURCE_SYSRAM). - Some archs do not set 'flags' for children nodes, such as "Kernel code". This patch does not change 'flags' in this case. 2015-02-12all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_structAndy Lutomirski
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures. 2013-07-14m32r: delete __cpuinit usage from all m32r filesPaul Gortmaker
The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. Note that some harmless section mismatch warnings may result, since notify_cpu_starting() and cpu_up() are arch independent (kernel/cpu.c) are flagged as __cpuinit -- so if we remove the __cpuinit from arch specific callers, we will also get section mismatch warnings. As an intermediate step, we intend to turn the linux/init.h cpuinit content into no-ops as early as possible, since that will get rid of these warnings. In any case, they are temporary and harmless. This removes all the arch/m32r uses of the __cpuinit macros from all C files. Currently m32r does not have any __CPUINIT used in assembly files. 2013-04-30dump_stack: unify debug information printed by show_regs()Tejun Heo
show_regs() is inherently arch-dependent but it does make sense to print generic debug information and some archs already do albeit in slightly different forms. This patch introduces a generic function to print debug information from show_regs() so that different archs print out the same information and it's much easier to modify what's printed. show_regs_print_info() prints out the same debug info as dump_stack() does plus task and thread_info pointers. * Archs which didn't print debug info now do. alpha, arc, blackfin, c6x, cris, frv, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m32r, metag, microblaze, mn10300, openrisc, parisc, score, sh64, sparc, um, xtensa * Already prints debug info. Replaced with show_regs_print_info(). The printed information is superset of what used to be there. arm, arm64, avr32, mips, powerpc, sh32, tile, unicore32, x86 * s390 is special in that it used to print arch-specific information along with generic debug info. 2013-04-30dump_stack: consolidate dump_stack() implementations and unify their behaviorsTejun Heo
Both dump_stack() and show_stack() are currently implemented by each architecture. show_stack(NULL, NULL) dumps the backtrace for the current task as does dump_stack(). On some archs, dump_stack() prints extra information - pid, utsname and so on - in addition to the backtrace while the two are identical on other archs. The usages in arch-independent code of the two functions indicate show_stack(NULL, NULL) should print out bare backtrace while dump_stack() is used for debugging purposes when something went wrong, so it does make sense to print additional information on the task which triggered dump_stack(). There's no reason to require archs to implement two separate but mostly identical functions. It leads to unnecessary subtle information. This patch expands the dummy fallback dump_stack() implementation in lib/dump_stack.c such that it prints out debug information (taken from x86) and invokes show_stack(NULL, NULL) and drops arch-specific dump_stack() implementations in all archs except blackfin. Blackfin's dump_stack() does something wonky that I don't understand. Debug information can be printed separately by calling dump_stack_print_info() so that arch-specific dump_stack() implementation can still emit the same debug information. This is used in blackfin. This patch brings the following behavior changes. * On some archs, an extra level in backtrace for show_stack() could be printed. This is because the top frame was determined in dump_stack() on those archs while generic dump_stack() can't do that reliably. It can be compensated by inlining dump_stack() but not sure whether that'd be necessary. * Most archs didn't use to print debug info on dump_stack(). They do now. An example WARN dump follows. WARNING: at kernel/workqueue.c:4841 init_workqueues+0x35/0x505() Hardware name: empty Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #9 0000000000000009 ffff88007c861e08 ffffffff81c614dc ffff88007c861e48 ffffffff8108f50f ffffffff82228240 0000000000000040 ffffffff8234a03c 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861e58 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c614dc>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f50f>] warn_slowpath_common+0x7f/0xc0 [<ffffffff8108f56a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff8234a071>] init_workqueues+0x35/0x505 ... v2: CPU number added to the generic debug info as requested by s390 folks and dropped the s390 specific dump_stack(). This loses %ksp from the debug message which the maintainers think isn't important enough to keep the s390-specific dump_stack() implementation. dump_stack_print_info() is moved to kernel/printk.c from lib/dump_stack.c. Because linkage is per objecct file, dump_stack_print_info() living in the same lib file as generic dump_stack() means that archs which implement custom dump_stack() - at this point, only blackfin - can't use dump_stack_print_info() as that will bring in the generic version of dump_stack() too. v1 The v1 patch broke build on blackfin due to this issue. Pull ARM SoC cleanups from Arnd Bergmann: "A large number of cleanups, all over the platforms. This is dominated largely by the Samsung platforms (s3c, s5p, exynos) and a few of the others moving code out of arch/arm into more appropriate subsystems. The clocksource and irqchip drivers are now abstracted to the point where platforms that are already cleaned up do not need to even specify the driver they use, it can all get configured from the device tree as we do for normal device drivers. The clocksource changes basically touch every single platform in the process. We further clean up the use of platform specific header files here, with the goal of turning more of the platforms over to being "multiplatform" enabled, which implies that they cannot expose their headers to architecture independent code any more. It is expected that no functional changes are part of the cleanup. The overall reduction in total code lines is mostly the result of removing broken and obsolete code." * tag 'cleanup' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arm/arm-soc: (133 commits) ARM: mvebu: correct gated clock documentation ARM: kirkwood: add missing include for nsa310 ARM: exynos: move exynos4210-combiner to drivers/irqchip mfd: db8500-prcmu: update resource passing drivers/db8500-cpufreq: delete dangling include ARM: at91: remove NEOCORE 926 board sunxi: Cleanup the reset code and add meaningful registers defines ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-mem.h local ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-power.h local ARM: S3C24XX: header mach/regs-s3c2412-mem.h local ARM: S3C24XX: Remove plat-s3c24xx directory in arch/arm/ ARM: S3C24XX: transform s3c2443 subirqs into new structure ARM: S3C24XX: modify s3c2443 irq init to initialize all irqs ARM: S3C24XX: move s3c2443 irq code to irq.c ARM: S3C24XX: transform s3c2416 irqs into new structure ARM: S3C24XX: modify s3c2416 irq init to initialize all irqs ARM: S3C24XX: move s3c2416 irq init to common irq code ARM: S3C24XX: Modify s3c_irq_wake to use the hwirq property ARM: S3C24XX: Move irq syscore-ops to irq-pm clocksource: always define CLOCKSOURCE_OF_DECLARE ...

2012-12-24time: convert arch_gettimeoffset to a pointerStephen Warren
Currently, whenever CONFIG_ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET is enabled, each arch core provides a single implementation of arch_gettimeoffset(). In many cases, different sub-architectures, different machines, or different timer providers exist, and so the arch ends up implementing arch_gettimeoffset() as a call-through-pointer anyway. Examples are ARM, Cris, M68K, and it's arguable that the remaining architectures, M32R and Blackfin, should be doing this anyway. Modify arch_gettimeoffset so that it itself is a function pointer, which the arch initializes. This will allow later changes to move the initialization of this function into individual machine support or timer drivers. This is particularly useful for code in drivers/clocksource which should rely on an arch-independant mechanism to register their implementation of arch_gettimeoffset(). This patch also converts the Cris architecture to set arch_gettimeoffset directly to the final implementation in time_init(), because Cris already had separate time_init() functions per sub-architecture. M68K and ARM are converted to set arch_gettimeoffset to the final implementation in later patches, because they already have function pointers in place for this purpose. 2012-10-12vfs: define struct filename and have getname() return itJeff Layton
getname() is intended to copy pathname strings from userspace into a kernel buffer. The result is just a string in kernel space. It would however be quite helpful to be able to attach some ancillary info to the string. For instance, we could attach some audit-related info to reduce the amount of audit-related processing needed. When auditing is enabled, we could also call getname() on the string more than once and not need to recopy it from userspace. This patchset converts the getname()/putname() interfaces to return a struct instead of a string. For now, the struct just tracks the string in kernel space and the original userland pointer for it. Later, we'll add other information to the struct as it becomes convenient. Signed-off-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2012-09-28Make most arch asm/module.h files use asm-generic/module.hDavid Howells
Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela, ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally. 2012-09-23m32r: Add missing RCU idle APIs on idle loopFrederic Weisbecker
In the old times, the whole idle task was considered as an RCU quiescent state. But as RCU became more and more successful overtime, some RCU read side critical section have been added even in the code of some architectures idle tasks, for tracing for example. So nowadays, rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit() must be called by the architecture to tell RCU about the part in the idle loop that doesn't make use of rcu read side critical sections, typically the part that puts the CPU in low power mode. This is necessary for RCU to find the quiescent states in idle in order to complete grace periods. Add this missing pair of calls in the m32r's idle loop. Reported-by: Paul E. 2012-06-01new helper: signal_delivered()Al Viro
Does block_sigmask() + tracehook_signal_handler(); called when sigframe has been successfully built. All architectures converted to it; block_sigmask() itself is gone now (merged into this one). I'm still not too happy with the signature, but that's a separate story (IMO we need a structure that would contain signal number + siginfo + k_sigaction, so that get_signal_to_deliver() would fill one, signal_delivered(), handle_signal() and probably setup...frame() - take one). Only 3 out of 63 do not. Renamed the current variant to __set_current_blocked(), added set_current_blocked() that will exclude unblockable signals, switched open-coded instances to it. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
