2021-02-27Merge tag 'io_uring-worker.v3-2021-02-25' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-blockLinus Torvalds
Pull io_uring thread rewrite from Jens Axboe: "This converts the io-wq workers to be forked off the tasks in question instead of being kernel threads that assume various bits of the original task identity. This kills > 400 lines of code from io_uring/io-wq, and it's the worst part of the code. We've had several bugs in this area, and the worry is always that we could be missing some pieces for file types doing unusual things (recent /dev/tty example comes to mind, userfaultfd reads installing file descriptors is another fun one... - both of which need special handling, and I bet it's not the last weird oddity we'll find). With these identical workers, we can have full confidence that we're never missing anything. That, in itself, is a huge win. Outside of that, it's also more efficient since we're not wasting space and code on tracking state, or switching between different states. I'm sure we're going to find little things to patch up after this series, but testing has been pretty thorough, from the usual regression suite to production. Any issue that may crop up should be manageable. There's also a nice series of further reductions we can do on top of this, but I wanted to get the meat of it out sooner rather than later. The general worry here isn't that it's fundamentally broken. Most of the little issues we've found over the last week have been related to just changes in how thread startup/exit is done, since that's the main difference between using kthreads and these kinds of threads. In fact, if all goes according to plan, I want to get this into the 5.10 and 5.11 stable branches as well. That said, the changes outside of io_uring/io-wq are: - arch setup, simple one-liner to each arch copy_thread() implementation. - Removal of net and proc restrictions for io_uring, they are no longer needed or useful" * tag 'io_uring-worker.v3-2021-02-25' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (30 commits) io-wq: remove now unused IO_WQ_BIT_ERROR io_uring: fix SQPOLL thread handling over exec io-wq: improve manager/worker handling over exec io_uring: ensure SQPOLL startup is triggered before error shutdown io-wq: make buffered file write hashed work map per-ctx io-wq: fix race around io_worker grabbing io-wq: fix races around manager/worker creation and task exit io_uring: ensure io-wq context is always destroyed for tasks arch: ensure parisc/powerpc handle PF_IO_WORKER in copy_thread() io_uring: cleanup ->user usage io-wq: remove nr_process accounting io_uring: flag new native workers with IORING_FEAT_NATIVE_WORKERS net: remove cmsg restriction from io_uring based send/recvmsg calls Revert "proc: don't allow async path resolution of /proc/self components" Revert "proc: don't allow async path resolution of /proc/thread-self components" io_uring: move SQPOLL thread io-wq forked worker io-wq: make io_wq_fork_thread() available to other users io-wq: only remove worker from free_list, if it was there io_uring: remove io_identity io_uring: remove any grabbing of context ...

2021-02-21arch: setup PF_IO_WORKER threads like PF_KTHREADJens Axboe
PF_IO_WORKER are kernel threads too, but they aren't PF_KTHREAD in the sense that we don't assign ->set_child_tid with our own structure. 2020-12-29local64.h: make <asm/local64.h> mandatoryRandy Dunlap
Make <asm-generic/local64.h> mandatory in include/asm-generic/Kbuild and remove all arch/*/include/asm/local64.h arch-specific files since they only #include <asm-generic/local64.h>. This fixes build errors on arch/c6x/ and arch/nios2/ for block/blk-iocost.c. Build-tested on 21 of 25 arch-es. 2020-12-17Merge tag 'trace-v5.11' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "The major update to this release is that there's a new arch config option called CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS. Currently, only x86_64 enables it. All the ftrace callbacks now take a struct ftrace_regs instead of a struct pt_regs. If the architecture has HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS enabled, then the ftrace_regs will have enough information to read the arguments of the function being traced, as well as access to the stack pointer. This way, if a user (like live kernel patching) only cares about the arguments, then it can avoid using the heavier weight "regs" callback, that puts in enough information in the struct ftrace_regs to simulate a breakpoint exception (needed for kprobes). A new config option that audits the timestamps of the ftrace ring buffer at most every event recorded. Ftrace recursion protection has been cleaned up to move the protection to the callback itself (this saves on an extra function call for those callbacks). Perf now handles its own RCU protection and does not depend on ftrace to do it for it (saving on that extra function call). New debug option to add "recursed_functions" file to tracefs that lists all the places that triggered the recursion protection of the function tracer. This will show where things need to be fixed as recursion slows down the function tracer. The eval enum mapping updates done at boot up are now offloaded to a work queue, as it caused a noticeable pause on slow embedded boards. 2020-12-16Merge tag 'tif-task_work.arch-2020-12-14' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-blockLinus Torvalds
Pull TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL updates from Jens Axboe: "This sits on top of of the core entry/exit and x86 entry branch from the tip tree, which contains the generic and x86 parts of this work. Here we convert the rest of the archs to support TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. With that done, we can get rid of JOBCTL_TASK_WORK from task_work and signal.c, and also remove a deadlock work-around in io_uring around knowing that signal based task_work waking is invoked with the sighand wait queue head lock. The motivation for this work is to decouple signal notify based task_work, of which io_uring is a heavy user of, from sighand. The sighand lock becomes a huge contention point, particularly for threaded workloads where it's shared between threads. Even outside of threaded applications it's slower than it needs to be. Roman Gershman <romger@amazon.com> reported that his networked workload dropped from 1.6M QPS at 80% CPU to 1.0M QPS at 100% CPU after io_uring was changed to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. The time was all spent hammering on the sighand lock, showing 57% of the CPU time there [1]. There are further cleanups possible on top of this. One example is TIF_PATCH_PENDING, where a patch already exists to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL instead. Hopefully this will also lead to more consolidation, but the work stands on its own as well" [1] https://github.com/axboe/liburing/issues/215 * tag 'tif-task_work.arch-2020-12-14' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (28 commits) io_uring: remove 'twa_signal_ok' deadlock work-around kernel: remove checking for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL signal: kill JOBCTL_TASK_WORK io_uring: JOBCTL_TASK_WORK is no longer used by task_work task_work: remove legacy TWA_SIGNAL path sparc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL riscv: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL nds32: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ia64: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL h8300: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL c6x: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL alpha: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL xtensa: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL arm: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL microblaze: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL hexagon: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL csky: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL openrisc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL sh: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL um: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ...

There was only one user left for the ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET variant of clocksource implementations, the ARM EBSA110 platform. Rather than changing to use modern timekeeping, we remove the platform entirely as Russell no longer uses his machine and nobody else seems to have one any more. The conditional code for using arch_gettimeoffset() is removed as a result. For CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, there are still a couple of platforms not using clockevent drivers: parisc, ia64, most of m68k, and one Arm platform. These all do timer ticks slighly differently, and this gets cleaned up to the point they at least all call the same helper function. 2020-11-13ftrace: Have the callbacks receive a struct ftrace_regs instead of pt_regsSteven Rostedt (VMware)
In preparation to have arguments of a function passed to callbacks attached to functions as default, change the default callback prototype to receive a struct ftrace_regs as the forth parameter instead of a pt_regs. For callbacks that set the FL_SAVE_REGS flag in their ftrace_ops flags, they will now need to get the pt_regs via a ftrace_get_regs() helper call. If this is called by a callback that their ftrace_ops did not have a FL_SAVE_REGS flag set, it that helper function will return NULL. This will allow the ftrace_regs to hold enough just to get the parameters and stack pointer, but without the worry that callbacks may have a pt_regs that is not completely filled. 2020-10-30timekeeping: default GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS to enabledArnd Bergmann
Almost all machines use GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, so it feels wrong to require each one to select that symbol manually. Instead, enable it whenever CONFIG_LEGACY_TIMER_TICK is disabled as a simplification. It should be possible to select both GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS and LEGACY_TIMER_TICK from an architecture now and decide at runtime between the two. For the clockevents arch-support.txt file, this means that additional architectures are marked as TODO when they have at least one machine that still uses LEGACY_TIMER_TICK, rather than being marked 'ok' when at least one machine has been converted. This means that both m68k and arm (for riscpc) revert to TODO. At this point, we could just always enable CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS rather than leaving it off when not needed. I built an m68k defconfig kernel (using gcc-10.1.0) and found that this would add around 5.5KB in kernel image size: text data bss dec hex filename 3861936 1092236 196656 5150828 4e986c obj-m68k/vmlinux-no-clockevent 3866201 1093832 196184 5156217 4ead79 obj-m68k/vmlinux-clockevent On Arm (MACH_RPC), that difference appears to be twice as large, around 11KB on top of an 6MB vmlinux. 2020-08-12mm: do page fault accounting in handle_mm_faultPeter Xu
Patch series "mm: Page fault accounting cleanups", v5. This is v5 of the pf accounting cleanup series. It originates from Gerald Schaefer's report on an issue a week ago regarding to incorrect page fault accountings for retried page fault after commit 4064b9827063 ("mm: allow VM_FAULT_RETRY for multiple times"): https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200610174811.44b94525@thinkpad/ What this series did: - Correct page fault accounting: we do accounting for a page fault (no matter whether it's from #PF handling, or gup, or anything else) only with the one that completed the fault. For example, page fault retries should not be counted in page fault counters. Same to the perf events. - Unify definition of PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS: currently this perf event is used in an adhoc way across different archs. Case (1): for many archs it's done at the entry of a page fault handler, so that it will also cover e.g. errornous faults. Case (2): for some other archs, it is only accounted when the page fault is resolved successfully. Case (3): there're still quite some archs that have not enabled this perf event. Since this series will touch merely all the archs, we unify this perf event to always follow case (1), which is the one that makes most sense. And since we moved the accounting into handle_mm_fault, the other two MAJ/MIN perf events are well taken care of naturally. - Unify definition of "major faults": the definition of "major fault" is slightly changed when used in accounting (not VM_FAULT_MAJOR). More information in patch 1. - Always account the page fault onto the one that triggered the page fault. This does not matter much for #PF handlings, but mostly for gup. More information on this in patch 25. Patchset layout: Patch 1: Introduced the accounting in handle_mm_fault(), not enabled. Patch 2-23: Enable the new accounting for arch #PF handlers one by one. Patch 24: Enable the new accounting for the rest outliers (gup, iommu, etc.) Patch 25: Cleanup GUP task_struct pointer since it's not needed any more This patch (of 25): This is a preparation patch to move page fault accountings into the general code in handle_mm_fault(). This includes both the per task flt_maj/flt_min counters, and the major/minor page fault perf events. To do this, the pt_regs pointer is passed into handle_mm_fault(). PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS should still be kept in per-arch page fault handlers. So far, all the pt_regs pointer that passed into handle_mm_fault() is NULL, which means this patch should have no intented functional change.
