2010-09-02drivers/net: avoid some skb->ip_summed initializationsEric Dumazet
fresh skbs have ip_summed set to CHECKSUM_NONE (0) We can avoid setting again skb->ip_summed to CHECKSUM_NONE in drivers. Introduce skb_checksum_none_assert() helper so that we keep this assertion documented in driver sources. Change most occurrences of : skb->ip_summed = CHECKSUM_NONE; by : skb_checksum_none_assert(skb); Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-05-17dm9000: fix "BUG: spinlock recursion"Baruch Siach
dm9000_set_rx_csum and dm9000_hash_table are called from atomic context (in dm9000_init_dm9000), and from non-atomic context (via ethtool_ops and net_device_ops respectively). This causes a spinlock recursion BUG. Fix this by renaming these functions to *_unlocked for the atomic context, and make the original functions locking wrappers for use in the non-atomic context. 2010-05-10net: trans_start cleanupsEric Dumazet
Now that core network takes care of trans_start updates, dont do it in drivers themselves, if possible. Drivers can avoid one cache miss (on dev->trans_start) in their start_xmit() handler. Exceptions are NETIF_F_LLTX drivers Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-11-11DM9000: Wake on LAN supportBen Dooks
Add support for Wake on LAN (WOL) reception and waking the device up from this signal via the ethtool interface. Currently we are only supporting the magic-packet variant of wakeup. WOL is enabled by specifying a second interrupt resource to the driver which indicates where the interrupt for the WOL is being signalled. This then enables the necessary ethtool calls to leave the device in a state to receive WOL frames when going into suspend. 2009-04-02workqueue: add to_delayed_work() helper functionJean Delvare
It is a fairly common operation to have a pointer to a work and to need a pointer to the delayed work it is contained in. 2009-03-22dm9000: locking bugfixDavid Brownell
This fixes a locking bug in the dm9000 driver. It calls request_irq() without setting IRQF_DISABLED ... which is correct for handlers that support IRQ sharing, since that behavior is not guaranteed for shared IRQs. However, its IRQ handler then wrongly assumes that IRQs are blocked. So the fix just uses the right spinlock primitives in the IRQ handler. NOTE: this is a classic example of the type of bug which lockdep currently masks by forcibly setting IRQF_DISABLED on IRQ handlers that did not request that flag. 2008-11-12netdevice: safe convert to netdev_priv() #part-2Wang Chen
We have some reasons to kill netdev->priv: 1. netdev->priv is equal to netdev_priv(). 2. netdev_priv() wraps the calculation of netdev->priv's offset, obviously netdev_priv() is more flexible than netdev->priv. But we cann't kill netdev->priv, because so many drivers reference to it directly. This patch is a safe convert for netdev->priv to netdev_priv(netdev). Since all of the netdev->priv is only for read. But it is too big to be sent in one mail. I split it to 4 parts and make every part smaller than 100,000 bytes, which is max size allowed by vger. 2008-08-07dm9000: Support MAC address setting through platform data.Laurent Pinchart

2008-06-24DM9000: Allow the use of the NSR register to get link status.Ben Dooks
The DM9000's internal PHY reports a copy of the link status in the NSR register of the chip. Reading the status when polling for link status is faster as it eliminates the need to sleep, but does not print as much information. Add an platform flag to force this behaviour, and a Kconfig option to allow it to be forced to the faster method always. 2008-06-24DM9000: Use NSR to determine link-status on internal PHYBen Dooks
The DM9000_NSR register contains a copy of the internal PHY's link status which we can use to determine if the link is up or down. This eliminates the more costly (and sleeping) PHY read when using the DM9000's own PHY. Signed-off-by: Ben Dooks <ben-linux@fluff.org> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jgarzik@redhat.com>

2008-06-24DM9000: Remove the 2 resources probe scheme.Laurent Pinchart
The dm9000 driver accepts either 2 or 3 resources to describe the platform devices. 2008-04-25net drivers: fix platform driver hotplug/coldplugKay Sievers
Since 43cc71eed1250755986da4c0f9898f9a635cb3bf, the platform modalias is prefixed with "platform:". Add MODULE_ALIAS() to the hotpluggable network platform drivers, to re-enable auto loading. NOTE: didn't change drivers/net/fs_enet/fs_enet-main.c "old binding" support. That looks problematic in the first place (it even uses the ancient "struct device_driver" binding scheme for platform_bus!) and I suspect it will vanish soonish when arch/powerpc rules the world.
